Pillows do the all important job of keeping the neck aligned with the spine while sleeping. A good pillow is one that’s free of lumps and sags, that’s new and firm enough to quickly retain its original shape when the head leaves the pillow, and one that offers the right thickness and support for you and your style of sleep.
The aim of this article is to recommend some of the best pillows of 2016, help inform you about what you should be looking for in a pillow, and to discuss when it’s time to get a new one.

What Should I Be Looking For in a Pillow?
There are a couple factors to consider when looking for a new pillow. The first factor people instinctively think about when considering pillows is comfort. That of course is a big one, but some of the other factors to think about when considering a pillow are breathability, durability, and support.
Breathability refers to how much air is allowed to pass through the material of the pillow. Some pillows do a better job than others at allowing fresh air through, keeping you cool and dry on warm nights.
Durability is of course the longevity of the pillow. This refers to both the shape and longevity of support as well as durability of the materials making up the cover and fringe.
Support is perhaps the most important factor and is related to comfort. Support refers to how firm the pillow is or how much resistance the pillow offers when you lay your head against it. Different types of sleepers require different support. Side sleepers require pillows with more support for instance, because when you sleep on your side there’s a greater gap between your head and the surface of the mattress that must be filled with a pillow if your sleep alignment is to remain correct. Those of us that are back or stomach sleepers require pillows with less support because the gap isn’t as big between the head and the mattress. To maintain proper sleep alignment, back and stomach sleepers should go for a pillow with less filling.
